Dear Linda: if there is any lasting good for the so-called Silent Majority to come out of the too long Terri Schiavo travesty, it will be that a geunine 'wakeup call' has been delivered. We who represent and advocate the old, the sick, and those in contunous pain must now raise our voices, in order that the right to die--in a manner of our choosing and at a time of our choosing--takes its proper place along with the inalienable American right to live free. Speaking for the senior member of the Lindeman Team, I pass along this message, as well as my thanks for being a Guestbook visitor. --Bard Lindeman

CHET: It was my pleasure writing about your extraordinary mother, who by the force of her personality has kept her Class of 1932 together, year after year, recalling their long-ago days as student citizens. Listening to her describe getting to school, wanting to be in school and seeking to learn, brings back tales of 'Good Old Days', to be sure. Moreover, you learn, as you listen, that these stalwart people truly were builders, model citizens and, as such, worthwhile mentors. We surely owe them a debt. Give your mother my very best regards---Bard Lindeman

Bard, Last April I retired from all that I had been doing up until that time. I vowed that I would spend the next phase of my life doing 'other things'. This month I covered city hall for the Northside News and got a byline on page five. A friend, reacting to my new career, likened my situation to your own. She encouraged me to read your stuff, and to say hi. -Jack

Dearest Granddaughter Stephanie: you made my day with your message. No, in truth you made my week. Hearing from you is always a treat, a tonic to awake my abiding, abundant love for you, and your wonderful sisters. I'm especially glad you were with me that day at the Gym, and witnessed ole' Grandpa Bard hefting those weights. Now you can appreciate, from this day forward, that a person really isn't "too old" to take on new, signifcant challenges. For now, just allow me to say we'll have some time together over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. We can all gather at The Place, in Lake Worth. Grandma Jan joins me in saying how much we look forard to hugging your neck, and hearing the latest news from school and family. --Your ever-lovin paternal grandfather. (The writing fool.)

And i even got to go to the gym with him and watch and join in during his grueling workouts. I think he is a crazy man! I could never lift all those weights, and do it over and over again. I am very proud of him, he has fought so hard and deserves so much. You are a highly respected man mr. bard! and for all the bard fans, did you know he does gardening too?! ( a mighty good one if i do say so myself! to my fellow green thumb ) Well love you grandpa Bard and hope to see you soon! Say hi to Nikie for me please!! Bard, Thank you for showing the world that the aging process doesn't have to result in the grumpy old guy syndrome. I am with you 1,000 percent on the retirement issue. It is indeed a hoax. But it won't go away soon because debilitated old age is very big business. Drug companies, nursing homes, retirement communities, government programs -- whatever would they do without dependent old folks. Keep on keeping on. You are wonderful.

Hello, I would like to know if "men" have harmone problems like women? The reason I ask, my husband and I got into a discussion where it seems that his friend is always saying that it's women's harmones that is always causing problems in their relationship. But I believe that maybe a man could have a harmone inbalance. Please educate me on this, not to use it against my spouse in our relationship but to allow us to realize that both sexes can have a problem in that area. Thank you for your time in this matter. Very respectfully, gardenangel

In your article in the Daily Herald on Tuesday, 3-23-04, you talked about cute grandbaby stories. Well, here is mine. My grandson Ryan (3 years old at the time) and his grandmother Pat were having dinner at the Colonial Resturant in St.Charles one evening when as usual the call of the bathroom comes during the meal. I took him to the bathroom and stood patiently by as he stood at the toilet waiting and waiting with his pants down around his ankles and shirt pulled up with one hand to his chin. We waited for what seemed several minutes when he turned to me and said "you know grampa, sometimes the pee pee works and sometimes it don't." I told him I surely could understand that.

Dear Hurting Too: The end of any close relationship, and especially a once-contented, successful marriage, is a loss. Indeed, I have long considered a divorce as akin to the passing of a partner, as it too is the 'death' of something that once began with hope, joy, and surely love. So, we sympathize with your loss--indeed, betrayal--on this day, of all days, and beyond. May you now find a way to work past your anger and begin to build a new life of purpose and meaning. --Bard Lindeman

Dear Leigh, (2nd message below) You've obviously read Mr. Stover's story http://www.beoutrageous.com/IYP/anger.htm so you know that surgery for prostate cancer can be a nightmare also. Just as important as the treatment plan decided upon is the skill of the physician. While even talented physicians can have unfortunate outcomes, it's the lack of compassion that is so difficult to understand for many of us. Bard himself has done well after brachytherapy, and you may have read about it here. I would encourage you to read the Coping Newsletter (link at left) -- there are many helpful hints for dealing with the grief and anger of losing a loved one. May you find peace and love again ...

We have four adult children and 8 grandchildren all whom have been hurt by this. the whole family is split up now. All for his pleasure. I am trying to realize that I have lost a sneak (has been going on for 18 months) and he has lost a loyal wife. Good luck to you and good health. Hope she gets dumped on soon.

Mr.Robert Stover's story is very sad. My husband, of 20 years, had never been seriously ill until he underwent brachytherapy 3 years ago. It was a nightmare for both of us. His health immediately declined for the next 6 months. He was confused, disoriented, depressed, rapidly losing weight, and dying right before my eyes. When I called the MD and questioned the care he was giving my husband, the MD stated that brachytherapy could not have caused the symptoms I was describing. I knew then that we had picked a lousy MD. I became very angry and demanded better care and more testing for my husband. Then a chest x-ray was done. One of the "seeds" had traveled to his lung. Only after this discovery did the MD give us literature explaining that the seeds can travel within the body. My husband did survive the ordeal, but not without paying a terrible price. Brachytherpy is NOT the way to go when prostate cancer is found.

(Boy) Jorge Viso: you'll always be son Paul's youthful friend, hanging out and waiting for the aforementioned Pistol to get ready, or finish cutting the lawn. (That last, to be sure, is meant to be humorous. Do you recall him ever cutting the lawn?)At any rate, it was good hearing from you directly; of course, I hear indirectly, from time to time. And isn't it odd, and wonderful, what often brings people closer? Meaning, of course, words set down, one right after another, even if they are dispersed (or scatered to the winds) on strange, hugely controversial issues, such as assisted suicide or so-called rational suicide. Lastly, your words of counsel about having on hand the prepared will (or similar, and authentic, document)are so well placed. Especially when the listeners, or readers, are young people. May your future be strong, healthful, and as peace-filled as this fractious, multi-troubled, yet enduring, nation countenances. --In affection, always, "Mister Lindeman."

hey "de meerleer,"

I'm gonna hope something was lost in the translation, bud. Certainly, you are entitled to your own prostatic opinions. And Lord knows, there is plenty of room for interpretation when reviewing the literature on PCa.

The take home message is probably: be it brachytherapy or RP ... choose your physician carefully -- either can turn into a nightmare if not undertaken with a large dose of vigilance.

In any case, thanks for reading, and as we say in Miami of USA ... "have a hectic!"

be very careful with these rather STUPID things to say : in cure for prostate cancer, brachytherapy has a place, but rather minimal. patients with more agressive disease do far less well with brachy than with radiation and/or surgery. i can provide you, morevor, a lot of information on very high incidence of morbidity after prostate brachytherapy. your case may justify brachy, but please be aware of the fact that a lot of prostate brachytherapy causes FAR MORE trouble than surdery and / or radiation.

Mr. Lindeman, Sorry, you'll never be Bard to me. But, Mr. Lindeman has a stately ring to it. I enjoyed your piece on the Schaivo case. Living here in Tampa, this case has been all over the newsprint and a constant item for the local news. When it hit the rest of the country, we were already saturated here. You make clear the point which gets glossed over by slogan chanting, "well meaning" people. There is, as far as medical science knows, no clear hope for this sad case. Every time it looked as if logical thinking would win the day, emotional retort upset the apple cart. It is an unfortunate dilemma, that wrenches the hearts of many. The video snippets inflamed those who knew little of the case before. The governor's interference was wrong at more than one level. It takes just a few minutes of one day (to make a living will) to affect what could be an exasperating years for those we leave behind. Mark Twain said "...let us live the kind of life that will make even the undertaker sorry." Not taking care of business now, while we can, could make Mr. Twain's musings impossible for those left with the decision at their feet. Drop me your e-mail address and I'll send you a pic of my 3 wonderful creatures. Jorge

After a decade of feeling lousy and a quadruple by-pass I finally was diagnosed with Polythyemia Vera a malignant red blood cell disorder. I was given oral chemo and the prognosis was people lived with treatment from 10 to 15 years after diagnosis. My by-pass was as a result of blood clots I could have had this thing for a while. At first I was very depressed. Finally, I decided to pull out of my depression and do something. T started a website www.focusonyourlife.net it has transformed several times I have been searching for what would be the best way to approach becoming an outrageous older man. I will buy your book when I get back from a trip I am going on today or if it's available in a book store in S.F. I will buy it then. I have had a turbulent life it seems like there is something I could do that would contribute to society in a positive way.

I came across your website, laughed really loud at the ten commandments from Dorothy (who lives on the farm). These commandments should be for outrageous older women too! How you feel is in the mind. A lot of people my age (I must be the youngest writing in I am in my 40's) can act too old for their age and feel that they have to act a certain way. I think it is a good idea to have friends who are older and younger than yourself basically who you get on with. I have a good friend of mine who is in her 80's and we just like each other's company. Also my partner's grandmother was a very good friend of mine she was amazing, I was in awe of her she was in her 90's and was looking after people in their 70's. We used to giggle a lot.
