It is fitting that a book written to men should take
its inspiration from women. When she suggested there should be a companion to her Be an Outrageous Older Woman, author Ruth
Harriet Jacobs was, in effect, assigning me the task of teaching senior men to shed
old, musty ways, and, instead, to become outrageous in their maturity. Publisher Sandra Brown agreed this was a worthwhile cause and
we were in business. Editor Sonja Hakala did her part, and to all three I owe my
gratitude.
I also owe a particular debt to those women who have added to my
knowledge about aging. They are the late Maggie Kuhn, Jane Porcino, Elma Holder, Sarah
Burger Greene, Carter Catlett Williams, Jane Brody, Betty Friedan, Caroline Bird,
Katherine Jeter, Doris Aiken, and Kaylan Pickford. To my mind, these women, and others,
have helped define the critical issues even as they have worked in the cause of a kinder
more just seniority for all Americans. |
